Skincare Basics

Let’s start with basics

by Stefania Rusu

Even if the skincare industry exploded in the past several years, there are people who like to stay basic in using products just because they may not have time or simply because are not interested in it. There is absolutely no problem in being basic, the secret is that you can be like that but still use ultimate amazing products that can change the skin and help you with different concerns.

What is a basic routine? A basic routine is when you stick to 3-4 products everyday, using them morning and evening time not matter what, in a fast and correct order.

The heroes in this basic routine are…

1. Precleanse-Cleanse or Double Cleanse

This is the main step every single day. You wake up, jump into the shower, cleanse your skin after the night before — because during the night time your skin regenerates faster and eliminates oil and sweat. As important is to cleanse evening time to remove make-up, impurities, debris, dust, pollution, bacteria and oil. Many people complain about they might feel their skin tight after cleanse, well yes if it’s the right one for you could be just because it tighten your pores but it’s also possible to use the wrong cleanser and dehydrate and unbalance the skin.

2. Moisturize!

A daily moisturizer would help you to protect your skin against environmental stress and pollution and hydrate in the first levels of your epidermis. My advice? At least an SPF30 morning time and a non SPF night time — I like to say, to feed the skin overnight. Why we need SPF? Well no matter if the sun is there or not, the UVB,UVA rays are still there, going through atmosphere, big gray clouds, damaging the skin at a crazy rate. It not just only helps you to maintain your youth, away from premature ageing also from hyperpigmentation and sunburn. Did you know sun is the number one cause of the ageing? Why not preventing?

3. Exfoliation

I know, there are people who had bad experiences with exfoliants. Why? Because it wasn’t the right one for them. Is easy to sensitize your skin during exfoliation and that is why I recommend before buying anything to get an advice from a skin expert. There are so many on the market that could make people even more confused. My advice? Use the exfoliant 2 to 3 times a week in the shower. It will save you time and effort. Think about it, if you have a correct basic routine, your skin can be really happy and well maintained by only using them everyday correctly. It will save you money, time and effort. And then, you will start having results and you might want to tackle your concerns even more, this is the step when you start use a serum, eye creams, boosters, etc.

What is skincare?

What is skincare?

Why people nowadays are getting more and more interested in this? Beauty industries developed at a crazy rate since the 90’s. People still had a skincare since forever, even they wouldn’t know how to describe it. They used herbs, plants and animal nature products, to enhance and beautify different parts of the body.

Egyptians were the first ones who used cosmetics for their religious ceremonies, women were using essential oils, henna for hair dye and tattoos, milk for their skin. Jews used olive oil to nourish their skin or grapeseed for body exfoliation and pomegranate extract as an antioxidant. Did you know Greeks invented the word” cosmetic “from Kosmetikos?

In Victorian Era, Queen of England, Victoria used honey masks for its nourishment and antiseptic benefits, also a great exfoliant because it contains gluconic acid (no, not glycolic acid) which accelerates shedding dead skin cells just like a scrub but without mechanical rubbing. In XX Century, we discovered the benefits of Tretinoins (derived from vitamin A as Retin-A), Botox, alpha hydroxy acids and esthetic surgeries.

The use of nanotechnology has created new ingredients with high efficiency and some pharmaceutical companies have offered preparations obtained by advanced techniques: exfoliants, antioxidants that fight against free radicals, stress and pollution, retinoids with effect in cell regeneration, anti-aging, acne. That is why some products are names Cosmeceuticals not just cosmetics. Technologies are using microencapsulated ingredients to create a serum or hydrating SPF’s, really lightweight, water based, with lovely smells and colors. The interest in this made the big and small companies to create their own skincare products, made with more and more stable ingredients that can stimulate the skin and promote anti-ageing at an accelerate scale.

Benefits of Pumpkin – Glowing Skin

Surprisingly, pumpkins aren’t just a Halloween decoration or an ingredient in a hearty soup; they’re the perfect ingredient for glowing skin! With this winters’s cold and windy weather, our skin is in need of a treat.

Five Main Benefits of Pumpkin:

  1. It’s packed with fruit enzymes and AHAs, which increase cell turnover, to brighten and smooth the skin.
  2. It has antioxidant Vitamin A and Vitamin C to help soften and soothe the skin and boost collagen production to prevent the signs of aging.
  3. Pumpkin seeds are filled with zinc, which helps with acne. It can control the hormone levels and oil production, and aids the healing of the skin. They also regulate sebum, great for an oily skin.
  4. The seeds are high in essential fatty acids and Vitamin E, which are necessary to maintain the good barrier function of the skin.
  5. The molecular structure of pumpkin is small, meaning it can penetrate deeper into the skin. This will help to treat a dull complexion, aging skin and pigmentation.

Which of our products contain pumpkin?

Dermalogica Extreme C  is a serum that can be used as a spot treatment or mixed with your prescribed Dermalogica Moisturizer. For spot treatment, put a small amount onto fingertip and press against your skin, while blending over areas of pigmentation or uneven skin tone. Dermalogica Powerfoliant is a two-part powder and liquid exfoliator, which when mixed together gives the skin a fresh look, concentrating on brightening. Used after cleansing, dispense 5-6 drops directly onto the face and neck, avoiding eye area, and gently massage over the skin until absorbed. Allow to activate for 2 to 3 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

Dermalogica Pure Light SPF30 is a daily moisturiser to keep skin protected against sun damage. Apply evenly and liberally to face, throat and neck, preferably 30 minutes prior to sun exposure.

When should Pumpkin be avoided?

Anyone with a pumpkin allergy should avoid products containing the ingredient. And because pumpkin is so active and stimulating, it may not be a viable option for clients with highly sensitive skin, sunburn, cracked heels, or open cuts.
